CIRCUS ROLAND BUSCH - MUNICH JUNE 2024

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

During their visit to Munich, I spent a week documenting the world of Circus Roland-Busch — day in, day out. In that time, I got to know the artists, listened to their stories, and witnessed their everyday lives up close. I watched their shows, visited their trailers, and spent countless hours backstage, capturing quiet, intimate moments most audiences never get to see.

What I discovered was a completely different world — fascinating, but also fragile. Circus Roland-Busch is home to several families from different countries who have dedicated their lives to the circus. Many of them were born into it. They are talented, hardworking, and full of spirit. But despite their passion, reality often doesn’t meet their hopes.

These days, fewer and fewer people visit circuses. Too often, the performers prepare with full dedication — warming up, putting on their makeup and costumes — only to face an empty tent. A venue with 1,100 seats, completely unfilled.
